BSSA National championships

Dear Athletes and Parents,

With Nationals fast approaching, we at DMSS want to help everyone prepare for the event with a few simple tips to make the experience as smooth and enjoyable as possible.

  1. Be on time. Nothing is more stressful than being late and having to rush. This is the easiest thing to control - give yourself a buffer and leave 10 minutes earlier than planned. If the coach has asked you to be at the pool at 6:45, aim for 6:35. This gives you time to get changed, sit down, relax, and be ready for warm-up without rushing.

  1. Take the gala one day at a time and one event at a time. Don’t get caught up in what’s coming next; stay focused on what needs to be done now. That includes arriving on time, completing your full warm-up, checking in with the coach before and after each race, doing a proper warm-down, and fueling after your events. Staying present helps you execute each step well.

  1. Have your basics packed and ready before you leave the house. Lay out your cap, goggles, swimsuits, racing suits, towels, snacks, sunscreen, and water. This reduces stress and prevents last-minute mistakes for athletes, parents, and coaches.

  1. Take the highs and lows as they come. If you have a race that isn’t your best, that’s okay. Take a breath, reset, and keep moving - don’t let one moment define your entire gala. The same applies to great races: celebrate them, enjoy them, and then move on to prepare for the next race. Great athletes know how to stay balanced no matter the outcome.

Recommended Movies to Watch Before a Championship Event:

Remember the Titans; Miracle; Field of Dreams; Moneyball; Ford v Ferrari; Creed; Friday Night Lights; The Karate Kid; Cinderella Man; McFarland, USA; Race; The Rookie; Cool Runnings; We Are Marshall; Ali; Rocky.

(Disclaimer: These are general recommendations. Final viewing decisions should always be made under the guidance and discretion of your parents/legal guardian.)

We are excited for a great Nationals ahead. Let’s stay focused, stay positive, and support one another throughout the gala. GO DMSS!!!

Yours in swimming,

Coach Colter
